The clematis symbolizes ingenuity or artifice, perhaps due to its seemingly clever climbing around trellises and walls. This beautiful plant also represents a mental beauty, strength and self-esteem.
Spectacular are the long, fluffy silvery-white hairs on the beak of the fruit. Especially pretty in the autumn sun, or when covered with snow or frost. Probably this appearance gave it the name Old man’s beard, but also traveller’s joy and withywind are names for the plant, found in forests, woodland edges and in thickets along rivers.
